NTT DoCoMo is the largest mobile communication provider in Japan with more than half of the countries subscribers. NTT is the creator of technologies such as i-mode and W-CDMA, and continues to develop futuristic technologies. Unlike other mobile providers NTT DoCoMo has a history of technology development, which was the area we had to pleasure to view during our visit. Being able to see DoCoMo’s “Vision of the Future” gave a special incite into the companies mindset. While companies in the United State such as att or Verizon mainly focus on subscribers and coverage, DoCoMo focuses on the mobile phone’s connection to our daily lives. They expect the phone to become a natural attachment to the body that provides information and communication to the user.
They envision a future where holograms and virtual reality, with sensory feedback, are the way we interact with mobile phones and computers. By using air as a medium to view images the size of the terminal can be greatly reduced since viewable screen is no longer a limitation. DoCoMo hopes to create a world of tomorrow where mobile telephony and computing marry to provide the user with greater access to information and an immersive experience.
