Interestingly, I've recently entertained two views on Collectivism. The first is the criticism, the second is a reprise in light of China's emergence. The two hardly satisfy any debates, but the important lesson for me is to be on guard against naively taking history as a final arbiter on anything, and to remain constantly vigilant and critical of ideas, no matter their merit.

I too agree. When I first looked at the whole subway thing it was very confusing and overwhelming. I wasn't quite sure how everything worked. After a couple time following Dr. C around though I sort of got the hang of it. There were a few close calls where I almost didn't make it, but thankfully I never got lost too badly. The subways were expensive, but a good alternative because there weren't many roads or cars. I liked the subway system all in all though.

I do believe we can achieve a semblance of Japanese transport if we work hard on rebuilding the infrastructure needed. We'll soon pay for our spread out communities and huge tracts of land. Then again, one could achieve a huge top speed traveling cross-country from Cali to Philadelphia on a bullet train of the future.

hanging out in hiroshima was definitely weird. I was kind of uncomfortable with the fact that everybody was so nice to us! It was especially weird seeing little kids and families posing for pictures and cheering and stuff in front of the a-dome? i dont understand why they would do that? I think all of us felt comfortable there.. I dont know if anybody from our group actually stopped and had they're picture taken in front of the dome... it just seemed somehow inappropriate.

I completely forgot about that room! Overall I thought the Panisonic building was pretty boring, I was ready to go after about a half hour... but i'm definitely glad we stayed longer and got to see that "room of tomorrow". I was really excited to see all these cool new technologies in Japan, but at the same time i found myself growing more and more frustrated that none of this will be hitting the states for YEEEARS!

That place was really sweet. I really didn't even realize what we were getting ourselves into when we went up there. The building looked so professional, i half expected to be walking into an office or something... not a crazy zen-like place with pebbles all over the floor and an amazing view the city (and Mt. Fuji in the distance).

You're right... people there were so polite and hardworking. Everybody even seemed so happy! It was very strange going into mcdonalds and having all of the people working there be so skinny and happy. You will never see something like that in the U.S. usually you either have young kids working who are inexperienced and like to slack or you get the really old (usually overweight) people that hate their life.

I completely agree that it would be so much more efficient to have a mass transit system in place in the United States. I was truly impressed with the speed, efficiency, and CLEANLINESS of the subways/trains in Japan. I dont know how they keep their cities so clean! The only prior experience I had with subways before Japan was in NYC - the two aren't even comparable.

Gah! I missed this Super Potato as well! I cannot believe it. This seems like a really freakin cool store and while I didn't have a console until the PS2 I still have fond memories of going over to my friend's houses just so I could play their video games, which in most cases meant playing their Nintendos. Oh Super Mario World, how I loved thee. Just like Streets of Rage, with Hagar, Cody, and Guy. ::Wave of nostalgia hits like a tsunami::

I agree with everybody, the subway was totally daunting at first but after we got used to it it wasn't such a mess. And Nick, you are totally right about the Passmo, it made me feel really cool. Like I was supposed to be there, maybe even lived there, not just some geeky American tourist.
